Strong sales and visitor numbers at New Designers 2009 Part 1
New Designers 2009 confirmed its position as the pre-eminent design degree showcase as Part 1 concluded and preparations got underway for Part 2 which opened from 16-19 July at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London N1.
From the New Designers Part 1 VIP Awards’ presentations at the private view on 8th July – when Sir Christopher Frayling opened the show - to the event’s midway point on Sunday 12th July, New Designers has recorded significant sales, as well as many prestigious job offers, commissions, and exhibition invitations for the graduates launching their professional careers at the show.
New Designers Part 1 attracted approximately 8000 visitors. Amongst the visitors were retail buyers from Anthropology, Argos, Debenhams, Marks & Spencer, Liberty, Tesco, Urban Outfitters and Selfridges all scouting for fresh talent and directional design. A number of placements have been offered to outstanding graduates to work with brands such as Hallmark Cards, Whittards and Tigerlily. Various galleries and curators including Abigail Ahern, Contemporary Applied Arts, Bute Space (Cardiff), the Goodwood Sculpture Park, The Liverpool Design Festival, SCP and even the Design Museum Australia approached graduates to participate in forthcoming exhibitions.
As New Designers Part 1 closed, the organisers had received details for sales and commissions totalling nearly £38,000, with leading collectors including Adrian Sassoon and Elizabeth Olver amongst the purchasers. There have been commissions from companies such as English Eccentrics, Harlequin, Hill & Co Rugs, Denby Pottery and Oasis and agents from Greece and Hong Kong. (The figure excludes sales or commissions from the One Year On exhibitors.) In the coming months the figure will significantly increase as professional buyers and commissioning agents make contact/conduct business with the graduates they noticed at the show.
School days proved popular with prospective design students –700 visited in order to meet graduates and tutors and investigate design degrees. With more than 100 courses represented at New Designers Part 1 there was considerable choice.
Sir Christopher Frayling opened the show with the comment, “Design plays a key role in our economy and society. It is something we’re good at – and our design education is second to none as well. It is really important that design is not treated, even in challenging times, as ‘the icing on the cake’. New Designers has become a terrific launch-pad for the next generation. It provides a glimpse of the shape of things to come!” The impressive results emerging from New Designers Part 1 serve to underline this statement.
