Successes at New Designers 2009 – Part 2
As New Designers Part 2 closed at the Business Design Centre on Sunday 19 July the atmosphere amongst the design graduate exhibitors was buoyant, with news coming through about significant sales; interest from manufacturers; work placements and job offers with highly respected international brands.
In the coming weeks and months the sales figures will increase from the £38,000 tally recorded at the show where negotiations and sales was conducted on-site in just four days between 16-19 July. (The figure matches sales achieved during New Designers Part 1.)
Furthermore, professional interior designers have placed commissions for quantities of furniture for interior contracts and design schemes that range from an original dining table for a private client’s bespoke home to seating and lighting for a new bar that will open in Newcastle in the autumn.
Amongst the thousands of visitors who came to discover this year’s freshest, brightest design talents were representatives from companies such as Adidas, Harper Collins, Lego and V-tech seeking employees for positions in studios in the UK, Germany, Denmark and Hong Kong. New Designers maintains its reputation as a unique event at which to compare and contrast young designers from more than 200 UK design courses – attracting prospective employers from across the world.
Lizzie Cullen, winner of the New Designers One Year On Award has been commissioned to create murals for Zizzi’s restaurant chain. Agents for Paul Smith and Tom Dixon expressed interest in Leeds graduate - Rodd McClintoch’s Lumin-Eye lights. Furniture designer Joe Luker sold his contemporary children’s bunk bed to a private client and is negotiating a manufacturing deal to put it into production. Bucks New University furniture design graduate, Arun Rana, achieved sales for 3 coffee tables and corner tables worth £4,600. In fact, the strength of Bucks New University’s graduates can be measured by the level of interest they attracted from organisations such as Suck UK, Mydeco, Crafts Council, Lakeland, Shin Azumi, Vitra, Anthony Dickens, McCollin Bryan, Vivid/Miscape, and the Dragons of Wall Street. Meanwhile a student from Leeds product design degree course will be discussing investment offers for his innovative micro-stir cooking ‘technology’.
Sustainable design was much in evidence, becoming a mainstream concern for this generation of graduates with projects including inexpensive cookers and lighting for 3rd world. Local authorities including Westminster Council expressed interest in Loughborough graduate Laurence Kemble-Cook ‘Pav Gen’ following a mention on the BBC Radio 4 ‘Today’ programme.
When architect Amanda Levete opened New Designers Part 2 on Wednesday 8th July and presented the prestigious New Designers Awards she said to the visitors at the VIP preview, ‘Creativity is what sets you apart from others; gives you edge; drives you and fulfils you. The big challenge is how to use it to your advantage and to the advantage of the society you live in...’ New Designers Part 2 demonstrated unequivocally the talent and determination of the class of 2009.
